Book Description:

The Materials Handbook is an encyclopedic, A-to-Z organization of all types of materials, featuring their key performance properties, principal characteristics and applications in product design. Materials include ferrous and nonferrous metals, plastics, elastomers, ceramics, woods, composites, chemicals, minerals, textiles, fuels, foodstuffs and natural plant and animal substances --more than 13,000 in all. Properties are expressed in both U.S. customary and metric units and a thorough index eases finding details on each and every material.

Introduced in 1929 and often known simply as "Brady's," this comprehensive, one-volume, 1244 page encyclopedia of materials is intended for executives, managers, supervisors, engineers, and technicians, in engineering, manufacturing, marketing, purchasing and sales as well as educators and students.

Of the dozens of families of materials updated in the 15th Edition, the most extensive additions pertain to adhesives, activated carbon, aluminides, aluminum alloys, catalysts, ceramics, composites, fullerences, heat-transfer fluids, nanophase materials, nickel alloys, olefins, silicon nitride, stainless steels, thermoplastic elastomers, titanium alloys, tungsten alloys, valve alloys and welding and hard-facing alloys.

Also widely updated are acrylics, brazing alloys, chelants, biodegradable plastics, molybdenum alloys, plastic alloys, recyclate plastics, superalloys, supercritical fluids and tool steels.

New classes of materials added include aliphatic polyketones, carburizing secondary-hardening steels and polyarylene ether benzimidazoles. Carcinogens and materials likely to be cancer-causing in humans are listed for the first time.

Book Description:

This book focuses on planning and scheduling applications. Planning and scheduling are forms of decision-making that play an important role in most manufacturing and services industries. The planning and scheduling functions in a company typically use analytical techniques and heuristic methods to allocate its limited resources to the activities that have to be done.

The application areas considered in this book are divided into manufacturing applications and services applications. The book covers five areas in manufacturing: project scheduling, job shop scheduling, scheduling of flexible assembly systems, economic lot scheduling, and planning and scheduling in supply chains. It covers four areas in services: reservations and timetabling, tournament scheduling, planning and scheduling in transportation, and workforce scheduling. At the end of each chapter, a case study or a system implementation is described in detail. Numerous examples and exercises throughout the book illustrate the material presented. The fundamentals concerning the methodologies used in the application chapters are covered in the appendices.

The book comes with a CD-ROM that contains various sets of powerpoint slides. The CD also contains several planning and scheduling systems that have been developed in academia as well as generic optimization software that has been developed in industry.

This book is suitable for more advanced students in industrial engineering and operations research as well as graduate students in business.

Michael Pinedo is the Julius Schlesinger Professor of Operations Management in the Stern School of Business at New York University. His research interests lie in the theoretical and applied aspects of planning and scheduling. He has written numerous papers on the theory of deterministic and stochastic scheduling and has also consulted extensively in industry. He has been actively involved in the development of several large industrial planning and scheduling systems.

About this textbook

This book is primarily a general text covering the whole sweep of the forest industries. The over-riding emphasis is on a clear, simple interpretation of the underlying science, demonstrating how such principles apply to processing operations. The book considers the broad question "what is wood?" by looking at the biology, chemistry and physics of wood structure. Wood quality is examined, and explanations are offered on how and why wood quality varies and the implications for processing. Finally, various "industrial processes" are reviewed and interpreted. All chapters have been written by specialists, but the presentation targets a generalist audience.

Written for:

Students studying forestry, forest engineering and wood processing, cross-disciplinary postgraduate students whose programmes require such knowledge, managers employed in both forestry and primary processing industries with very diverse skills who start with no appreciation of the growing of trees, the properties of wood and the diversity of processing options

Book Description:

This book is primarily a general text covering the whole sweep of the forest industries. The over-riding emphasis is on a clear, simple interpretation of the underlying science, demonstrating how such principles apply to processing operations. The book starts by considering the broad question "what is wood?" by looking at the biology, chemistry and physics of wood structure (first 4 chapters). This sets the scene. Next key chapters examine "wood quality" – explaining how and why wood quality can be so variable and implications for processing. Finally, in a series of chapters, various "industrial processes" are reviewed and interpreted. The 2nd Edition is a total revision. A few chapters remain relatively unchanged (no change for the sake of change). Many have been totally rewritten. All chapters have been written by specialists, but the presentation targets a generalist audience.

Book Description:

This book contains six chapters on central topics in materials science. Each is written by specialists in the field, and gives a state-of-the-art presentation of the subject for graduate students and scientists not necessarily working in that field. Computer simulations of new materials, theory and experimental work are all extensively discussed. As nanomaterials are of great current interest, most of the topics discussed have a bearing on nanomaterials and nanodevices. In addition to inorganic nanotubes, metallic nanocrystals, electronic nanodevices, spintronics and interfaces on an atomic scale, the text also presents computer simulations on one of the less well understood fields in solid-state physics and materials science: glasses and undercooled fluids.

Book Description:

Managing safety in the workplace requires a wide range of safety and health subjects to be mastered. Traditionally, this has been achieved by reference to an encompassing text such as Safety at Work - widely acknowledged as the authoritative guide to safety and health in the workplace. Written by a team of specialist contributors under the joint editorship of John Ridley and John Channing, it has been prepared in association with the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health and covers their academic requirements for membership.

In order to make elements of this authoritative work available to those who require information on only one of the major aspects of occupational safety and health, the following modular texts, drawn from the fifth edition of Safety at Work, are now available:
Safety Law
Risk Management
Occupational Hygiene
Workplace Safety
These separate texts include all the latest changes in health, safety, employment and environmental legislation and are essential reading for all who need to have knowledge of the subject. Particular emphasis is placed on the role of the manager and recognises the shift in employment numbers from manufacturing to service industries. Important coverage is given to the influences on health and safety, practical safety management and behavioural techniques and to the management of chemicals, ergonomics and the environment.

Hardening And Tempering Engineers Tools

Author: George Gentry, Edgar Westbury

Publisher: Argus Books Ltd

Date: 1977

ISBN: 0852427873

Introduction:

THE efficiency of cutting tools employed in engineering and other
crafts depends very largely on their correct heat treatment. The
use of carbon steels is still predominant and, although the methods
of hardeninga nd tempering such tools is relatively simple and
straightforward, there are many usersof these toolswhoruninto
difficulties when attempting to harden and temper them.

In the past, the methods employed in these processes have often
been governed mainly by rule of thumb, and experienced tool
makers have often evolved individual methods which have been in
some cases closely guarded as trade secrets. Reliable practical
information on thes ubjecthas been difficult to obtain. There is,
however, no reason why even the novice should not be able to
harden and temper tools quite successfully by adopting simple
methods which can be applied without the need fore laborate
equipment.

Since theoriginal edition ofthis book by George Gentry was
publishedover 30 yearsago, severallater editions have included
information on current trends in tooltechniqueand metallurgy to
keepitfullyupto date withmodern practice, while still concentrating
on basicrequirements of the smallWorkshop. In thepresentedition
the chapter on case-hardeninghasbeen completely re-written, with
more fully detaileddescriptionof thelatest processes, materials and
equipment; alsonew information on gas hardening, nitridingand
flame hardening.Other additions includereference to methods of
measuring hardness, and details of gasand electric furnaces of atype
suited to the small workshop, technical school, laboratory or factory.

Althoughtool bits and Welded tips have largelysuperseded forged
toolsfor lathes and other machines, the chapteron forging has been
retained, because itisveryusefulfor every toolmaker toknow how
toshapesteel by hot working under the hammer. It simplifies the
production of many tools which do not conformwithorthodoxshape,
and often effects considerableeconomy in costlytool steel. But the
heattreatment of modern high-speedsteeltools,and tippingof
tools with superhard metals such as tungsten carbide, hasnot been
neglected. In view of the increasing use oftheCentigradetempera-
ture scale, this has been used, together with equivalentFahrenheit
figures inmost heating statistics.

Although the principles ofhardeningandtemperingdo not change,
exceptin respect ofsuch new materials as are introducedin the
course of metallurgical progress, these processes maybesimplified,
and successisrendered more certain,by taking full advantage of
the modern appliances for heattreatment.

Book Description:

This book is exclusively concerned with wood modification, although many of these processes are generic and can be applied to other lignocellulosic materials. There have been many rapid developments in wood modification over the past decade and, in particular, there has been considerable progress made in the commercialisation of technologies. Topics covered include:

  • The use of timber in the 21st century
  • Modifying the properties of wood
  • Chemical modification of wood: Acetic Anhydride Modification and reaction with other chemicals
  • Thermal modification of wood
  • Surface modification
  • Impregnation modification
  • Commercialisation of wood modification
  • Environmental consideration and future developments

This is the first time that a book has covered all wood modification technologies in one text. Although the book covers the main research developments in wood modification, it also puts wood modification into context and additionally deals with aspects of commercialisation and environmental impact.

This book is very timely, because wood modification is undergoing huge developments at the present time, driven in part by environmental concerns regarding the use of wood treated with certain preservatives. There has been considerable commercial interest shown in wood modification over the past decade, with products based upon thermal modification, and furfurylation now being actively being marketed. The next few years will see the commercialisation of acetylation and impregnation modification. This is a new industry, but one that has enormous potential.

This book will prove useful to all those with an interest in wood modification including researchers, technologists and professionals working in wood science and timber engineering, wood preservation, and well as professionals in the paper and pulp industries, and those with an interest in the development of renewable materials.

Book Description:

In 1992 the Centre of Environmental Science (CML) at Leiden University, The Netherlands, published a Guide on Environmental Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology. Many copies of this guide have been sold all over the world, setting the standard for a long time.
Since then LCA methodology has progressed enormously and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has published a series of Standards on LCA. These developments have now been incorporated into a new Handbook on LCA authored by CML in cooperation with a number of other important institutes in the area of LCA.
The of this Handbook on LCA is to provide a stepwise `cookbook' with operational guidelines for conducting an LCA study step-by-step, justified by a scientific background document, based on the ISO Standards for LCA. The different ISO elements and requirements are made operational to the `best available practice' for each step.
This book will appeal to persons from a wide range of scientific disciplines working in industry, in government, as consultants, or at university, who are interested in learning more about LCA and in performing LCA studies. It will be of especial interest to students and researchers in the field of LCA, industrial ecology, and those interested in environmental sciences in general.
CML is strongly involved in the development of a standard methodology to determine environmental impacts of products, i.e., LCA. This is done within international fora such as the Society for Environmental Toxicology (SETAC), the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), and the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP).

The code portion of this document covers the structural design, materials selection, and construction of environmental engineering concrete structures. Such structures are used for conveying, storing, or treating liquid, wastewater, or other materials, such as solid waste. They include ancillary structures for dams, spillways, and channels. These structures are subject to uniquely different loadings, more severe exposure conditions and more restrictive serviceability requirements than normal building structures. The commentary discusses some of the considerations of the committee in developing the ACI 350 Code, and its relationship with ACI 318. Emphasis is given to the explanation of provisions that may be unfamiliar to some code users. References to much of the research data referred to in preparing the code are given.

Book Description:

Master locksmith Steven Hampton, author of the best-selling Secrets of Lock Picking, takes the art of picking locks one step further with Modern High-Security Locks. Here, he collects some of today's most popular pick-resistant locks and sets out to see which ones hold up to their claims. However complex a lock gets, it must be durable, dependable and user-friendly. It has to be tough enough to endure physical attack, but it can't be machined too tight or it will jam up with just a breath of dust. It must be simple and easy to lock and unlock with its key, or the customer will not pay the higher price for it. It is this delicate balance between security and utility that allows the locksmith to open this new generation of locks. Hampton shows locksmiths how each lock is picked and how long it will take. He details the tools of the trade and includes patterns and instructions for making your own picks and tension wrenches. He even includes ancient Tibetan Buddhist tantric visualization exercises to help locksmiths learn to "see" the inner workings of the lock within the mind's eye. Veteran locksmiths or those new to the trade will find Hampton's latest book an invaluable sourcebook. For academic study only.
